The Area

Working in Summit County

Akron, Cuyahoga Falls, Stow, Barberton, Hudson and Green.

Summit is our busiest county outside the Cincinnati area, and the work here is steady rather than sporadic. We deal with the county board directly, which is a different and generally better experience than the statewide referral system.

Getting around. I-77, I-76 and SR-8 keep Summit compact. Akron to Hudson is twenty minutes, Barberton to Stow about the same. It is an easy county to work without a long drive.

Where the work actually happens in Summit County

A good part of this job is getting somebody out of the house and into their own community. Knowing the area is a real advantage, and if you already know these places you are ahead before you start. In Summit County that regularly means:

Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which is on your doorstep and free
The Towpath Trail, flat and accessible for miles
The Akron Zoo
Summit Metro Parks, one of the best systems in the state
Lock 3 in downtown Akron for events
Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens

Referrals here come to us through Summit DD, the Summit County Board of Developmental Disabilities and the statewide system. We do not control when a case appears. What we do control is whether we already have somebody local, cleared and ready when it does, which is the entire reason this page exists.

What We Look For

Requirements

DODD eight hour orientation certificate, or willingness to complete it
Current CPR and First Aid certification
Valid driver's license, a reliable vehicle and current auto insurance
High school diploma or equivalent
Social Security card, for I-9 verification
Experience as a DSP, STNA, HHA, caregiver, home health aide or personal care aide is welcome. We also train the right person
